Daniel Oliver James Jr.'s Obituary

Mr. Daniel Oliver James Jr., age 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by his devoted family on December 30th, 2024. Born in Galivants Ferry, SC, Dan was the son of the late Daniel Oliver Sr. and Rena Singleton James. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his five beloved siblings: Jack James, Mack James, Jim James, Gedelle Sawyer, and Nora Ann Smith. Dan was a lifelong member of Pisgah Global Methodist Church and a proud resident of the Dog Bluff community, where he spent his entire life working the family farm and caring for those around him. After a brief time at Wofford College, he returned home to work alongside his father, dedicating himself to both the land and the people of his hometown. Dan's greatest pride and joy was his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Ann Doyle James; his children, Dean (Kathleen) James and Dawn James; his grandchildren, Kasey Boatwright (Wyman) and Katey McDowell (Jay); and his treasured great-grandson, Yates Oliver Boatwright. He was also like a father: (Daddy Dan) to Rena (Bart) King and his boys– Mason, Knox, and Banks King. He was surrounded by special family & friends Dixie Ray, Vickie Johnson, Julie Coker, Mike Barnhill, Brother Mark Jones, and Ulice Smith. Dan's legacy extends to a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends who were all touched by his kindness and love. For more than 50 years, Dan coached in the Aynor and Galivants Ferry communities, becoming a mentor and role model for countless young people. His love for children and unwavering belief in the goodness of others were hallmarks of his character. Whether on the field or in everyday life, he taught those around him that kindness and generosity always mattered. Dan also had a passion for gardening, sharing his harvest with neighbors and strangers alike. His community knew him as the quintessential good neighbor, always quick with a helping hand or a kind word. As one friend so beautifully wrote in a birthday card, "You are the kindest, most generous man ever born." Funeral services for Mr. Dan will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Pisgah Global Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will visit with friends after the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, please honor Dan's memory by making a donation to the Aynor Little League, PO Box 692 Aynor, SC 29511 or to Pisgah Global Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 1600 Pisgah Church Road Galivants Ferry, SC 29544, or by following his example be good to someone in need.
